Pikes Peak Summit Proposal in Colorado Springs

Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a breathtaking location for a proposal, offering panoramic views and a sense of adventure. The summit stands at 14,115 feet, providing stunning vistas of the Rocky Mountains. Whether you drive up the Pikes Peak Highway, hike the Barr Trail, or take the Cog Railway, this iconic spot is perfect for an unforgettable proposal.

Pikes Peak Key Features

  • Stunning Views: At the summit, you get expansive views of the surrounding landscape, including the Rocky Mountains and Colorado Springs. It's a dramatic backdrop for a proposal.

  • Multiple Access Options: You can reach the summit by driving, hiking, or taking the scenic Cog Railway. The Pikes Peak Highway is a 19-mile road with numerous scenic pull-offs.

  • Historical Significance: Pikes Peak has a rich history, being one of the most famous mountains in the U.S. It's known for inspiring the song "America the Beautiful."

Important Considerations

  • Location: Pikes Peak is near Colorado Springs. It's easily accessible from Denver, with the drive taking about 1.5 hours. For a less stressful experience, avoid peak traffic hours and consider staying overnight in Colorado Springs.

  • Length: The summit can be reached via the Pikes Peak Highway (19 miles), Barr Trail (13.6 miles round trip), or the Cog Railway.

  • Difficulty:

    • Not difficult if driving, although the road is very windy and can sometimes be backed up with traffic.

    • Not difficult if taking the Cog Railway, but tickets sell out quickly and start around $60 per person. Also, there is a limit of only 40 minutes at the top of Pikes Peak before you are required to head back down via the Cog Railway.

    • Hiking is the most challenging way to go and should only be considered for experienced hikers. All trails require proper preparation, including water, snacks, and sun protection. The Barr Trail is most challenging, the Crags Trail offers a slightly easier hike, but it is still long.

  • Availability/Accessibility: The area is open year-round, but weather can impact accessibility. Always check for road closures or Cog Railway availability before planning your trip. The summit is fully wheelchair accessible.

  • Crowded-ness: The summit can get busy, especially during peak season. Consider proposing early in the morning or late afternoon for a more intimate experience.

  • Cost: There is a timed-entry fee to access the Pikes Peak Highway during peak months, which varies depending on the number of people in your vehicle. There are some months that you are required to have a reservation before getting the Gateway Entrance. Confused? I’m here to help if I’m your Colorado proposal photographer!

  • Are dogs allowed?: Dogs are allowed on the trails and on the summit but must be kept on a leash. Dogs are not allowed on the Cog Railway. Remember to bring water and snacks for them, too.

  • Backup Plans: Colorado's weather is unpredictable, especially at high altitudes. Always have a backup plan. If the weather is unfavorable, consider proposing at a nearby location like Garden of the Gods or Manitou Springs, which offers indoor and outdoor options.

  • LGBTQIA+ Friendly: Yes, the area is welcoming to everyone.

  • Native Land: This area traditionally belongs to the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho peoples.

My Final Tip

Altitude sickness is no joke! If you're coming from out of state, especially from lower altitudes, it's wise to arrive in Colorado Springs a few days early to adjust to the elevation. This can help minimize the risk of altitude sickness when heading up to Pikes Peak. Also, consider proposing at one of the scenic pull-offs along the Pikes Peak Highway instead of the very top if you're concerned about the effects of high altitude. These pull-offs offer stunning views and a more comfortable environment for those sensitive to altitude changes. Remember, being prepared can make your special moment even more enjoyable!
